Vader

"Requiem for Vader"

This is our sweet boy Vader who we adopted about a year and a half ago from Skyllerís wonderful shelter and Iím so sorry to say that he died a few months ago, hit by a car. It happened so fast and I was right there, unable to change or control what unfolded. I was, and remain, devastated, as are all the people who knew Vader. The man who hit him had just lost his dog a few months before, and we stood in my kitchen, two strangers, hugging each other and falling apart. This has been a real tragedy in my familyís life and Iíve been crying all over again looking through his pictures and writing this.

My sister said to me, "Karen, if you had to choose having a year with Vader or never having him at all, what would you choose?" The answer to that is easy. So let me tell you about my boy and what an awesome dog he was. Vader, as you can see, was absolutely gorgeousÖa perfect, beefy Patterdale terrier. We have a big family and they all have dogs, so he had a blast with his dog (and human) cousins. His best buddy was our cat Reuben, who disappeared about two weeks after Vader died. *sigh* He loved hiking with mom all over the place, with dad in the back woods, riding in the car, lots and lots of toys and treats and especially rawhide chews, jumping up on any lap that would have him and sleeping late under the covers between mom & dad. He never once had an accident in the house, walked great on the leash and was super easy to train. He was simply a Great Dog and our best boy and he will be sorely missed.

Just recently, because I couldnít stand the lonely house anymore, we rescued another dog from a shelter in NW Georgia and drove all the way to PA to pick him up. Heís a Patterdale/ Australian Cattledog-Blue Heeler mix (we fell in love with the Patterdale breed-awesome, active dogs) and he looks so much like Vader sometimes, it breaks my heart. His name is Qwill and heís a good dog, too, and has made us happy again. Heís just a little pup and cuter than I can describe and itís nice to have a "baby" in the family. I think every day that Vader and Qwill would have loved each other and would have been fast friends and brothers and that pinches at my heart. Heíll get all the love we have, as Vader did.

Thanks so much to Skyller's for giving us the opportunity to share our lives with Vader for as long as we could. They are dynamic, dedicated people who genuinely care about the dogs and cats that have come to them and they work really hard to keep all the animals comfortable and find them happy homes. Thanks also to the family and friends who have been there for us in our grief with hugs and cards and cookies. I know everyone misses our boy. The grief is still close to the surface and words canít begin to describe it, but I hope you get a sense of how much Vader was loved. Blessings to all, and may you find the dog of your dreams! - Karen Andersen, Feb. 24, 2010

Anvil

Below is the letter I wrote for Anvil that was read to him before he passed.
If you could add it to his picture on your memorial page I would be very grateful.
Thank you.

Thank you for your love of life which inspires us to live ours more fully.
Thank you for your love which you have shown unconditionally.
Thank you so much  for sharing your life with us and allowing us to share ours with you.
You are my best friend and companion and itís so hard to let you go but I know you are going to a much better place and I will see you there someday.
Thank you for everything you are.
 I love you so much.
 Iíll see you soon.

Anvil has been the dog that has made the most impact on how I look at Pit bulls today.
His eagerness to please, loyalty, courage, and love,... like no other.
Looking at such a massive, muscular dog and watching him carrying a teddy bear wearing a bow and never damaging it.
Sharing a bed with him, car rides, and swimming at the lake.
For the short time he was here,....
I too will see you someday.
